Description

*Leather Leg-of-Mutton Shotgun Case, Marked “R.C.R.” – 79 cm Long*

A good quality early 20th-century English leather leg-of-mutton shotgun case, measuring approximately 79 cm in length, 22 cm at its widest point and 8 cm in depth. Constructed in thick, hand-stitched bridle leather with a domed fitted end, stitched edges and a hinged, brass-mounted lockplate marked “SECURE LEVER”. The case retains its original stitched leather carrying handle and adjustable shoulder strap. The owner’s initials R.C.R. are stamp-impressed into the large name panel on the outer lid. The interior retains its original lining sections and partitions. An excellent period case for a takedown shotgun.

Historical Note:
Leg-of-mutton cases became fashionable from the late Victorian era through the 1930s as a compact and discreet method for carrying a takedown sporting gun. Their rigid, tapered form allowed the barrels and action to sit securely inside without bulk, making them especially popular among game shooters, travellers and estate owners. Many high-end London and provincial gunmakers retailed these cases, typically with brass lever locks and heavy saddle-stitched leather construction, as seen in this example. Initialled cases were commonly commissioned as personal equipment for sportsmen or as presentation pieces.

*Condition*
The leather exterior shows expected age wear with scuffs, marks and colour variation consistent with long service, but remains firm and structurally sound. Brass lockplate is intact and operational though no key is present. Stitching throughout remains secure with only minor areas of lifting. Interior lining is worn commensurate with its age and field use. Shoulder strap and handle are original and intact. A solid, untouched example retaining excellent patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
