An original mounted horse hoof ashtray, inscribed “Hoof Hearted B.W.R.”, constructed from a genuine equine hoof with a fitted brass horseshoe and inset metal ashtray liner. The hoof has been finely preserved, retaining an attractive natural sheen and well-defined surface texture. Measuring approximately 7.3 cm high, 9.7 cm wide, and 13.6 cm long, this piece exemplifies the craftsmanship and wit of traditional equestrian mementoes. The initials B.W.R. are engraved or stamped to the upper mount, likely representing either the maker, owner, or stable associated with the horse.

Historical Note:
Mounted hooves were often fashioned as keepsakes from retired or deceased horses—whether treasured hunters, polo ponies, or racehorses—commonly produced in Britain and the Commonwealth during the late 19th and 20th centuries. The title “Hoof Hearted” has become one of racing’s most notorious pun names and has been used by several genuine racehorses across different eras and countries:

A South African racehorse “Hoof Hearted”, trained by J. P. Fox and owned by Messrs H. B. Lawrence & L. L. Cunha, foaled 30 October 2000, a bay gelding by Joshua Dancer (USA) out of Zip Your Lip (AUS), bred by Right Conformation Stud (Racing Post). The horse was also humorously referenced by Horse & Hound as “Hoof Hearted – one not to say quickly and repetitively… In 10 starts, the South African-based horse demonstrated little ability to perform on the track.” (Horse & Hound).

An American thoroughbred “Hoof Hearted”, foaled in 1981, by Docile Boy out of Silver Sails (Equibase).
