~ Nautical Brass Gimballed Wall Oil Lamp ~
A lovely quality brass oil lamp on a gimballed bracket.
The brass oil lamp would have been used on a ship or boat, mounted to the wall, with the gimbals keeping the oil lamp steady and upright in all conditions by isolating it from the rocking motions of a ship at sea. In harbour the lamp could be taken from its gimbals and used on the dining table for atmospheric eating.
The lower half of the gimbal bracket has a lead filled bottom for stability.
The stem holding the gimbals is bolted to a thin pressed brass plate for wall mounting.
There are no makers marks.
The oil lamp is complete with its glass chimney.
~ Dimensions ~
The lamp has a base diameter (of the content reservoir) of 4 ¼ inches (10.5cm). It measures 12 inches (30.5cm) high (including the glass chimney).
The gimbal mount has a diameter of 5 inches (12.5cm) and a height of 6 inches (15cm). The depth, when hung, from wall to front of lamp would be 7 ¼ inches (18.5cm).
The lamp in its mount has a height of 15 ½ inches (39.5cm) and weighs 4 Kg.
~Condition ~
The piece is in very nice condition. The brass is in need of some polishing but overall looks sound with no dents or major scratches. The glass chimney is intact with no cracks or chips. For some reason there is a perfectly cut hole in to the side of the reservoir.
