*New Zealand, WW2, 1939-1945: New Zealand War Service Medal & King George VI War Medal (Victory Medal), with Ribbons*
New Zealand War Service Medal
The New Zealand War Service Medal (NZWSM) is a World War II campaign medal awarded to New Zealand military personnel, reserves, the Home Guard, Merchant Navy, and Naval Auxiliary Patrol Service. Approved in 1946 and worn after the standard Commonwealth medals, it required 28 days of full-time or six months of part-time service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Approximately 238,000 medals were issued, with automatic eligibility for those whose service ended due to death, injury, or honourable discharge from wounds. Less than 75% of these medals were claimed after the war.
The obverse displays an uncrowned, left-facing effigy of King George VI with the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.” The reverse reads “FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1939-1945” above a fern leaf—a design element inspired by the All Blacks’ jersey at the request of the Labour government. The reverse and suspension were designed by historian Dr. John Beaglehole and engraver E. Mervyn Taylor. The medal, featuring a black and white ribbon to reflect New Zealand’s national colours, was issued unnamed.
The War Medal 1939–1945
The War Medal 1939–1945 was a British decoration awarded to citizens of the British Commonwealth who had served in the Armed Forces or Merchant Navy full-time for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
The obverse of this cupro-nickel medal bears the crowned head of King George VI and the legend GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMB: REX ET INDIAE IMP:’. The reverse shows a victorious lion trampling on a dragon with the dates 1939-1945′ above. WW2 Medals were not engraved when issued.
