~ Pair Of Bronze Statues Depicting Greek Gods Hermes & Nike ~
A nice pair of bronze statues depicting the Greek god and goddess Hermes and Nike.
Both are naked but for a loin cloth and both are in a running stance with one hand raised.
Hermes holds a pouch in one hand and a baton in the other.
Hermes holds flowers or leaves in one hand while the other holds a long trumpet.
They both ride upon zephyrs blown by cherubs.
The bronzes are mounted on circular stepped marble pediments.
Both statues are engraved ‘De Bologne’.
~Hermes & Nike ~
Hermes was the emissary and messenger of the gods. He was the god of trade, heraldry, merchants, commerce, roads, sports, travellers, and
athletes in Ancient Greek religion and mythology; the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia, he was the second youngest of the Olympian gods
Nike was a goddess who personified victory. She was variously described as the daughter of the Titan Pallas and the goddess Styx, and the
sister of Kratos (Strength), Bia (Force), and Zelus (Zeal).
~ Dimensions ~
The statues both stand at approx. 48cm (19 inches) including the bases.
Together they weigh 5.7 Kg.
~ Condition ~
Nikes trumpet has snapped and been glued back into place but not professionally.
Hermes baton looks as though it may also have been a trumpet, or at least a little longer but has also snapped off.
Hermes is also missing one finger.
The bases have a few nibbles to the edges.
Otherwise the statues are in a great condition and both display well.
