*Philippines, c.1880-1900, Moro Budiak Spear*
A substantial Philippine Moro spear of Budiak type, measuring approximately 206.5 cm in overall length, fitted with a 24.5 cm leaf-shaped iron blade. The blade is of robust, utilitarian form with a gently curved profile and acute point, showing age-consistent surface patination and forge texture, and is secured directly into the wooden haft.
The long hardwood shaft is plain and undecorated, emphasising function over ornament, and is reinforced below the blade with tight rattan binding, providing both structural strength and a forward hand-hold for close control when thrusting. The blade junction is further secured by a small iron fixing beneath the binding, a typical construction feature of Moro pole weapons intended for practical use. The butt terminates in a simple rounded wooden end, with no metal ferrule or counterweight.
While examples of Moro Budiak spears vary considerably in blade length and form, this example conforms to the long, slender pole format associated with the type, combining reach with a compact but effective cutting and thrusting blade. The overall length places it firmly within the class of long Moro polearms rather than shorter staff-mounted knives.
Historical Note:
Pole weapons of this form were used by Moro warriors of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside more widely known edged weapons such as the kris, barong, and kampilan. Spears and long polearms were valued for their reach in formation fighting, ambush, and defensive positions, particularly against colonial forces during the Spanish and early American periods.
*Condition*
Good, honest condition consistent with age and use. The blade retains its original surface with areas of oxidation and wear. The rattan binding is intact and secure, showing expected age darkening and minor losses. The wooden shaft shows handling marks and wear commensurate with a functional weapon.
