*Prussian, M1864 Faschinenmesser Etched Kurhessian Gendarmerie Sidearm w/ Scabbard*

An attractive and historically interesting German / Prussian brass-hilted Faschinenmesser sidearm retaining its original leather and brass-mounted scabbard, dating to the late 19th century. The sidearm features a single-edged blade with flat spine and broad fuller, terminating in a spear-point tip, with substantial remains of original etched foliate decoration to both sides.

Most significantly, the blade retains faint but partially legible etched Fraktur/Kurrent script interpreted as:

“1te Kurhess. Gendarmerie Hundertschaft”
(“1st Kurhessian Gendarmerie Company/Detachment”).

This attribution links the piece to the Kurhessian (Electoral Hessian) gendarmerie/police structure operating under Prussian administration following the annexation of Hesse in 1866. The surviving etched unit designation considerably enhances the historical and collector appeal of the piece.

The brass hilt is of classic M1864-pattern form with recurved quillons and diagonally ribbed grip panel to one side. A red felt blade buffer remains present beneath the guard. The blade retains visible traces of decorative foliate etching throughout despite age-related fading, oxidation, and historic cleaning. The black leather scabbard is fitted with matching brass throat and chape mounts and appears period to the sidearm.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 46.5 cm. Overall length: 58.7 cm.

History Note:
Following Prussia’s annexation of the Electorate of Hesse (Kurhessen) in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War, regional police and gendarmerie formations were reorganised under Prussian administration while often retaining traditional regional titles. Sidearms of this type were commonly carried by gendarmerie personnel, administrative troops, and various state service formations throughout the late 19th century.

*Condition*
Overall condition is good for age and service use. The blade shows extensive age-related grey patination, scattered dark oxidation, light surface pitting, and evidence of historic polishing. Etched decoration and script remain visible but faint throughout. The brass hilt retains an attractive mellow tone with handling wear and minor scratches. Red felt washer remains present. The scabbard leather shows age cracking, surface wear, and shrinkage consistent with age. Brass mounts show dents, marks, and an apparent old repair or filled area to the throat mount. No active structural instability noted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
