Description

*Rare 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Officers Sword, Gilt Etched, By J.J. Runkel, Solingen*

89.5cm curved blade, 102cm overall

This remarkable later version of the 1788 pattern light cavalry sword features a stirrup hilt, leather grip, and a broad, slightly curved flared hatchet-point blade, signed "J.J Runkel, Solingen" on the spine. The blade showcases a thick, flat spine with a deep narrow fuller above and a broad, shallower fuller below—characteristics of the Montmorency style. The narrow top fuller extends approximately 65cm along the curved blade, while the broader lower fuller runs about 76cm. Typically, officers' swords are adorned with decorated blades, whereas troopers' blades remain plain. This particular blade is engraved in the classic Solingen style, displaying gilt-etched mounted hussars, flourishes, trophies of arms and at the forte the Solingen cartouche.

The rare British 1788 pattern light cavalry sabre was the first regulation sword adopted by the British cavalry, closely modeled after those used by Austrian and Prussian cavalry units. Although approved by the British Ordnance Board, variations in hilt styles emerged due to unclear written descriptions and requirements. These differences were especially noticeable between swords manufactured in the UK and those imported from Solingen. This example was crafted in Solingen and imported by John Justus Runkel, a German importer of steel, swords, and sword blades based in London from 1778 to 1808.

*Condition*
Excellent used condition given the swords age and likely service, There are some nicks to the leather grip, the blade is pitted and has some nicks but the gilt etching is still clear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
