The Wilkinson Lead Cutter No. 3 sword was designed for strength training and feats of swordsmanship. Known as a lead cutter, this type of broad, heavy English sword or cutlass came in four different weights, with No. 3 being the second heaviest. It features a formidable 32.5-inch blade etched with “Lead Cutter No 3” in a scrolling design above the “Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London” shield. The sword includes a metal cutlass-style hilt, a regulation blackened steel bowl guard, and a ribbed cast iron grip.

Cavalrymen used lead cutting swords to strengthen their wrists and forearms, with the size of the sword reflecting the user’s strength. These swords were also used in ‘sword feats,’ as detailed in manuals by John Musgrave Waite and Professor Harrison, where performers would demonstrate their prowess by cutting through lead bars or dead sheep in public displays known as ‘assaults at arms.’

This example comes complete with its original scabbard that rarely survive, featuring a brass frog stud and brass chape.

*Condition*
The sword is in good condition commensurate with age and service, there are significant nicks to the blade but the blade itself is quite clean and bright. The engraving is very clear. The cast grip has some rusting. The scabbard is very worn with a significant tear through the middle and the stitching has opened on the back. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
