~ Rare Circa 2nd–1st Century BC Celtiberian Icalcuscen Semis Coin ~
The Obverse depicts a male head towards right behind dolphin, unfortunately the dolphin is not visible anymore.
The Reverse depicts a horse standing towards left and a star above, all above ICALCUSCEN legend. The legend is also worn.
Historical Note:
This coin was struck at the Celtiberian settlement of Icalcuscen, in Hispania, during the turbulent period of Rome’s wars with Iberian tribes. The obverse portrait likely represents a local chieftain or stylised deity, while the reverse horseman is a recurring motif in Iberian coinage, symbolising warrior aristocracy and independence. Such coins illustrate the blending of Iberian culture with Roman monetary systems as Rome extended control over Hispania.
