Description

*RARE, Led Zeppelin Debut LP, c.1970, Atlantic-UK Polydor Pressing 588171 Orange Sleeve A//1 B//1 Matrix*

A highly collectible early UK pressing of Led Zeppelin's explosive self-titled debut album on the Atlantic label. This particular copy is a transitional reissue from circa late 1970 / early 1971, featuring a desirable combination of early artwork and updated label text, making it a sought-after variant for serious collectors.

Sleeve: Fully laminated E.J. Day sleeve featuring the early and highly distinctive orange “LED ZEPPELIN” lettering to the front cover, with the grey shadow stripe across the base. The rear sleeve retains the original band portrait layout and includes the “Uptight An’ Outasight” credit at the lower right. Catalogue number 588171 printed along the bottom edge. An authentic early sleeve variant, reused for this later Polydor issue.

Inner Sleeve: The original poly-lined inner sleeve is included and date-stamped '12 70' (December 1970), confirming the pressing period.

Labels: Iconic plum/red Atlantic labels with catalogue number 588171. Label text confirms “Made in Gt. Britain”, distribution by "Polydor Records Limited" and licensing from "Atlantic Recording Corps USA," typical of post-1969 issues. Publishing credits are the corrected "Warner Bros. / 7 Arts" and "Jewel Music" credits distinguishing this from the earliest 1969 miscredited labels.

Matrix / Runout: Uses the original 1969 stampers, evidenced by the hand-etched matrix numbers:
Side One: 588171 A//1 (with the '8' crossed out) + additional codes 13 141
Side Two: 588171 B//1 (with the '8' crossed out) + additional codes (13 22 approx)
The crossed-out “8” on both sides indicates a cancelled earlier cutting reference, a known Polydor practice, while the final A//1 and B//1 confirm first lacquer cuts, not later recuts. The supplementary etched numbers are consistent with mother/stamper manufacturing identifiers.

A highly collectible early UK pressing of Led Zeppelin, the explosive self-titled debut by Led Zeppelin, issued on the Atlantic label and pressed in the UK by Polydor.

Historical Note:
Led Zeppelin formed in London in 1968 under guitarist Jimmy Page, completing the line-up with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. Their self-titled debut album, released in January 1969, introduced a powerful fusion of blues, hard rock, and folk that helped redefine the direction of late-1960s rock music.

Produced by Page, the album established Led Zeppelin as a major international force almost immediately and laid the foundations for what would become hard rock and heavy metal. Early UK Atlantic pressings, particularly those using original 1969 metalwork, are now regarded as landmark artefacts in the history of modern rock music.

*Condition*
Sleeve: The fully laminated sleeve remains structurally sound but shows clear signs of age and use. There is noticeable edge and corner wear, most pronounced along the bottom edge where scuffing, small chips, and areas of paper loss are visible, particularly at the corners. Light lamination lift is present along the edges, with scattered age spotting and surface marks across the white areas of the cover. The orange “LED ZEPPELIN” lettering remains bold and legible, and the overall artwork displays well despite the wear. A short split is visible to one edge of the sleeve, consistent with handling and storage over time. No writing or repairs observed.

Vinyl: The record retains a good surface sheen but shows light to moderate signs of play. There are fine hairline marks and light surface scuffs visible under strong light, along with a more noticeable superficial scratch on one side that appears consistent with handling rather than abuse. No deep gouges are visible. Labels are clean and bright with only minor spindle marking around the centre hole. Overall, the vinyl presents as a well-kept, carefully played example.

Inner Sleeve: Original polylined inner sleeve present, plastic liner is loose, with age toning and light handling wear, consistent with period use.

Overall: A genuine, early UK example showing honest period wear. While not a near-mint copy, it remains a very presentable and authentic collector’s piece with strong visual appeal and intact originality. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
