Description

*RARE WW1 JAC Hook Quillion Bayonet 1907 Pattern and Original Scabbard. Dated 1915*

Sword bayonet for use with the .303 caliber Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfield No. I Mk. III (SMLE) rifle. This bayonet bears the faded Crown Cypher with the letters G.R for Georgius Rex (Monarch from 1910-1936), the pattern 1907 and the month of manufacture "12" and the year "15" and the letters JAC - for the maker J. Chapman. On the reverse ricasso, broad arrow - government acceptance mark and "X" (Bend Test Mark) and various proof marks. It comes with the correct scabbard a British No. I Mk. II scabbard with teardrop frog stud.

The 1907 Lee-Enfield Hook Quillion Bayonet has a single-edged blade with a spear-point tip. The blade measures approximately 17 inches (43 cm) in length. It was designed for thrusting and slashing, making it a versatile weapon for both offensive and defensive purposes.

The term "hook quillion" refers to the distinctive shape of the bayonet's crossguard. It features an upward-curved quillion, or crossguard, which resembles a hook. This design was intended to aid in dislodging the enemy's rifle from their hands during close-quarters combat. In service, the lower quillion was unpopular. In Britain, the lower quillion was officially deleted in 1913. The lower quillion was removed from the majority of early bayonets during refurbishment.

*Condition*
The blade is in excellent condition - with no discernable nicks, the crossbar, quillion and pommel has some minor rusting and the hilt has some dings commensurate with its age. The blade fits snugly into the scabbard. The scabbard is in good condition but shows signs of wear and tear commensurate with its age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
