Description

*Spanish, 19th Century, Large Navaja Folding Knife, Marked Navajas de Toledo*

A substantial and impressive Spanish folding knife (navaja), of classic Andalusian form, featuring a long, broad single-edged blade with clipped point and pronounced ricasso. The blade is stamped “Navajas de Toledo”, indicating manufacture or trade association with Toledo, long renowned for edged-weapon production.

The knife is fitted with a traditional ring-pull locking mechanism, requiring the ring at the spine to be lifted in order to disengage the backspring and allow the blade to fold—an iconic safety feature of larger Spanish navajas intended for both utility and display.

The grip is richly constructed from horn scales (likely bovine), secured by multiple brass pins, and segmented with shaped brass bolster and spacer sections, giving the handle its distinctive articulated, serpentine profile. The butt terminates in a faceted brass cap. The overall size place this firmly in the category of a large, statement navaja rather than a pocket example.

Approx. Measurements - Overall length (open): 58 cm. Blade length: 27 cm. Length folded: 31 cm

Historical Note:
Large navajas of this type were produced in Spain throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in Andalusia and Castile, where restrictive laws on fixed blades encouraged the development of sophisticated folding knives with locking systems. Toledo, already famous for swords and military blades, became a recognised centre for high-quality navajas during this period.

Oversized examples such as this were often associated with status, regional identity, and traditional dress, and are now highly sought after by collectors for their dramatic proportions and craftsmanship. The multi-section brass-and-horn grip seen here is typical of higher-grade production and visually echoes the sinuous form that made the navaja an instantly recognisable Spanish weapon.

*Condition*
The blade shows honest age-related patination and surface wear consistent with period manufacture and use; the stamp remains legible. The horn grip displays natural variation in colour and tone, with minor age marks and handling wear. Brass fittings show patina and light surface wear. The ring-pull locking mechanism is present and functional, allowing the blade to lock open and fold correctly. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
