Description

*Swedish, Dated 1950 M/39 Wool Field Tunic, Made by Rory Idealkläder, Size 96, Modified with German Insignia*

An original Swedish Army M/39 wool field tunic dated 1950 and manufactured by Rory Idealkläder, size 96. The tunic is constructed in the typical heavy grey-green Swedish military wool and follows the classic M/39 design with four front pockets and concealed front fastening but the rear pockets have been removed. Internally the garment retains its original manufacturer’s label together with Swedish Tre Kronor issue stamps confirming military acceptance.

This example has been later modified with German-style fittings and insignia to create the appearance of a German field blouse. These additions include German pebbled buttons to the front and shoulders, a Heer-style breast eagle, grey shoulder boards with white piping, and a pair of collar tabs mounted to the collar. The collar tabs appear to be later East German police or security service type rather than wartime German Heer issue, indicating the tunic was likely adapted for reenactment, theatrical costume, or display purposes rather than representing a historically correct German uniform.

Approx. Measurements – Shoulder to shoulder: 46 cm. Sleeve length: 64 cm. Overall length (hem to top of collar): 82 cm.

History note:
The Swedish M/39 tunic was introduced prior to the Second World War and remained in service with the Swedish armed forces for many years afterwards. These durable wool uniforms were widely released as surplus during the post-war period and were sometimes adapted by collectors, film studios, and reenactment groups to resemble German field blouses because of their similar cut and cloth. As a result, examples such as this are occasionally encountered where original Swedish military garments have been fitted with German or German-style insignia to create a display or costume uniform.

*Condition*
Service-worn example showing signs of age and modification. The Swedish wool tunic remains structurally sound and retains its internal maker’s label and Tre Kronor issue stamp dated 1950. German pebbled buttons are fitted to the front, with four present and two missing; one shoulder button remains while the other is absent. The rear pockets are missing and were likely removed during later modification to a German field blouse. The applied insignia and shoulder boards are later additions and show typical age and wear. The interior lining displays general wear consistent with age and use. Overall a solid example of a Swedish M/39 tunic later modified with German-style fittings. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
