Description

*Swiss, Model 1852 Cavalry Sabre by Wester & Co., Solingen, with Scabbard – American Civil War Import*

An original Swiss Model 1852 Cavalry Sabre, measuring 88.5 cm blade, 104 cm overall, complete with its correct steel scabbard. The curved single-edged blade with broad fuller is stamped “Wester & Co” and “S. OLINGEN” at the ricasso, confirming Solingen manufacture for export.

The hilt is brass with a three-bar guard, plain backpiece and pommel. The grip retains its original leather covering with twisted brass wire binding, both tight and intact. The sabre sits in its steel scabbard with two suspension rings, showing honest service use.

Historical Note:
The Swiss Army adopted the Model 1852 Cavalry Sabre to replace earlier straight-bladed weapons, equipping its mounted troops with a more modern curved sabre. The type remained in Swiss militia use throughout the mid-19th century, though Switzerland itself maintained neutrality and did not field its cavalry in the continental wars of the period.

Large numbers of these sabres were also produced for export by Solingen firms such as Wester & Co. Blades were often stamped with the abbreviated “S. OLINGEN”, a standard export convention signalling Solingen manufacture. This mark, alongside the retailer’s name, was designed to assure foreign buyers of German steel quality.

During the American Civil War (1861–65), agents on both sides sourced thousands of cavalry sabres from Europe to supplement shortfalls in US production. The Swiss Model 1852, along with French 1822 and Prussian 1811 patterns, was among those imported and carried by both Union and Confederate cavalry. It is likely that this sword saw service in America, certainly the Model 1852 is firmly associated with Civil War imports.

Condition*The blade shows grey patination with scattered dark spotting and pitting, consistent with age and field service. The edge remains sound, with only minor wear from use. The brass hilt has developed a warm, even patina with small marks of handling. The leather grip covering and twisted brass wire binding survive well, an uncommon and attractive feature.

The scabbard is original, with both suspension rings intact. It displays expected age patina and impact dents along the body, particularly mid-way and towards the shoe, but remains structurally solid with a good fit to the blade. Overall, a complete, untouched sabre with great service character. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
