Description

*USA, WWII, 60mm Mortar Mod.19 (P.228), Deactivated*

An original U.S. Army 60mm Mortar, Model 19 (Brandt pattern), deactivated to official 1990 Birmingham Proof House standards. The tube is clearly stamped P.228, matching the deactivation certificate, and finished in wartime black/ordnance paint with signs of service wear and use. Retains its pivoting base and firing mechanism assembly with legible Spanish-marked control dial reading “SEGURO AUTOMATICO” (Automatic Safety), typical of American-licensed Brandt mechanisms used across Allied forces. The interior is correctly bored out and deactivated in accordance with legal requirements.

Approx Measurements: Overall length: 81 cm, Barrel: 60 mm calibre (2.5"), Baseplate: 18 cm x 11 cm

Markings: P.228 (serial); SEGURO AUTOMATICO (safety marking)

Historical Note:
The 60mm M2 Mortar, introduced in 1938, was the standard light infantry mortar used by U.S. forces during the Second World War and modelled closely on the French Brandt system. Portable yet powerful, it provided invaluable close fire support in every major theatre—from Normandy to the Pacific islands. The Model 19, a wartime refinement, retained the simple drop-fire system with improved safety and elevation adjustments. Post-war, many were supplied to allied nations under Lend-Lease and training aid programs.

*Condition*
Retains a substantial proportion of original wartime finish with areas of rubbing, minor paint loss, and light pitting consistent with age and service storage. Mechanically complete but fully deactivated to proof standards. Matching deactivation certificate included. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Deactivation Certificate: Issued by: Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House, 20 October 1990, Type & Make: Mortar Mod.19, Number: P.228, Calibre: 60mm (2.5”), Country of Origin: U.S.A., Submitted by: Michael D. Long Limited, Certified by: R.J. Hancox, Proof Master.
