Description

*Victorian / Edwardian Period, Silver-Plated Vesta Match Case with Engraved Decoration*

A decorative late 19th to early 20th century silver-plated vesta or match safe of rounded rectangular form, profusely engraved to both sides with scrolling foliate decoration and bordered with a punched edge pattern. The front retains a vacant shield-shaped cartouche lightly engraved with what appears to be the initials “W M”.

The base incorporates the original ribbed striker surface, while the hinged lid opens and closes correctly via a side-mounted thumb catch. The interior is plain and darkly toned through age and use. Unmarked externally or internally, though constructed in the typical manner of British and continental silver-plated vestas of the period.

Approx. Measurements – 5 cm x 3.5 cm x 1 cm.

History Note:
Vesta cases became highly popular during the Victorian period following the widespread introduction of friction matches in the mid-19th century. Designed to safely carry matches in the pocket while protecting them from moisture, they were produced in a vast range of materials from silver and silver plate to brass and novelty forms. Engraved examples such as this were often carried as everyday gentleman’s personal accessories and frequently bore monograms or presentation initials.

*Condition*
Generally good vintage condition with age-related wear, surface scratches, small areas of plate wear and scattered tarnishing throughout. The striker remains visible and functional. Hinge and lid operate correctly. No obvious hallmarks visible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
