Description

~ Watercolour Of A Cavalier By F. Allan Stewart (1865-1951) ~

A handsome watercolour of an English Civil War cavalier soldier by the Scottish artist F. Allan Stewart.

The painting depicts a member of the Royalist army of King Charles I or ‘Cavalier’.

He is in full uniform standing with banner over his shoulder, standing in a field or such like.

The painting is not signed. However the piece was purchased with another of Stewarts work which was signed. This piece and the signed
piece were all framed and labelled identically, coming from the same collection so we can safely say that this is the genuine article.

The painting is mounted and presented in a modern glazed frame.

~ Dimensions ~

The painting measures 12cm (4 ¾ inches) by 23cm (9 inches).

The frame measures 21cm (8 ¼ inches) by 32cm (12 ½ inches).

The piece weighs 595g.

~ Condition ~

The painting is in a very nice condition with only the slightest evidence of foxing to the very top.

The frame is in good order.

~ F. Allan Stewart ~

F. Allan Stewart (1865-1951) was a Scottish painter who built his reputation on romantic, historical and particularly military paintings as well as
landscapes and portraits.

He worked for some time at the Illustrated London News during which time he went to South Africa as a 'special' artist during the Boer War.

During his lifetime his work was shown at the RSA, at the Royal Academy, at Glasgow and Liverpool, and at other provincial exhibitions.
