    Description

    A watercolour painting of the HMS Fleetwood (F47) by the famous Marine artist Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell presented to the Borough in 1957. The painting is signed on the bottom right hand corner, and the ship is named on the bottom left.

    ~ Dimensions ~

    The frame has a length of 18 inches (45.75cm), a height of 14.5 inches (36.75cm) and a depth of 0.7 inches (2cm). The painting has a length of 10.5 inches (26.75cm) and a height of 7.5 inches (19cm)

    ~ Condition ~

    The painting is in excellent condition with no sign of foxing or damage. The frame is in a good condition.

    ~ HMS Fleetwood ~

    HMS Fleetwood was a Grimsby class sloop. Built by Devonport Royal Dockyard, the ship was laid down 14th August 1935, launched on 24th March 1936 and completed 19th November 1936. She was sold for scrapping in 1959.

    ~ Comm. Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell (1888-1978) ~

    In 1904, Commander Eric Campbell went to sea as a midshipman serving on submarines 1909 -1917 and anti-submarine work until 1919. He commanded several small ships in the eastern Mediterranean and served in the Fleet Air Arm 1926-1930. In 1938 he was recalled to the navy to carry out meteorological work in Colombo. His studio was above the old Gieves & Hawkes building on The Hard, Portsmouth.
