German Great War G98 bayonet by Gottlieb Hammesfahr with Pyramid mark

WW1 Imperial Mauser M84/98  Pattern Bayonet, the blade is maker marked Gottlieb Hammesfahr Solingen Foche, with the pyramid trademark on one side The spine has the imperial crown proof mark and the pommel also shows the imperial crown over the no 16 indicating that this was either manufactured in 1916 or the sawback was removed in 1916? Either way, a nice historic item.

These sawbacks were meant to be a useful tool in the field for many uses around the trenches or cooking and setting up camp etc. However they were very unpopular with the soldiers on both sides as they could cause unnecessarily gory wounds. Also there was a belief amongst the soldiers that they were used to saw off limbs, so many soldiers captured with these in their possession would be shot. As they were so unpopular the German high command sent many of them back to the manufacturers to have them ground off, and this bayonet was one of them.

*Condition*

The blade is in excellent condition with no pitting, the cross guard has small but uniform pitting which does not detract from this bayonet. The button works perfectly. The grips have several marks in keeping with age. The pommel although darkened is in excellent condition with a clear imperial stamp. The scabbard has a couple of minor dents but the bayonet fits nice and snuggly. Please see our pictures as these form part of our report.
