Description

*Yugoslavian, Post-War, Zastava M53 (MG 42/53) Machine Gun, Deactivated, with German dfb 1944 Bipod*

An outstanding Yugoslav Zastava M53 (MG 42/53) general-purpose machine gun, designated M53 following its formal adoption in 1953, deactivated to UK specification and presented in excellent overall condition. This example clearly illustrates the post-war Yugoslav continuation of the legendary German MG 42, combining original German wartime components with definitive Yugoslav state and military control markings. Following the Second World War, Yugoslavia took over abandoned MG 42 production facilities and continued manufacture of the design using captured German machinery and, in many cases, original WW2 components. The resulting post-war machine guns remained mechanically and visually near-identical to wartime MG 42s and saw decades of service worldwide.

The receiver and frame are crisply stamped with the Yugoslav socialist crest and factory designation ПРЕДУЗЕЋЕ 44 (Enterprise/Factory 44), together with the model marking 7.9 M53 and matching serial N-41467. Numerous components are additionally stamped “BK”, a recognised Yugoslav military inspection mark confirming official acceptance into service.

The gun is fitted with an original German wartime steel bipod, correctly marked dfb (Gustloff-Werke, Werk Suhl), dated 1944 and bearing Waffenamt acceptance—an especially attractive surviving German component. The correct bakelite buttstock shows honest service wear, adding to the authenticity of the piece.

Historical Note:
The German MG 42, introduced during the Second World War, became one of the most influential machine gun designs ever produced, renowned for its extremely high rate of fire, reliability, belt-fed operation, and rapid barrel-change system. After 1945, the design proved so successful that it formed the basis of numerous post-war developments, including West Germany’s MG 1, MG 2, and MG 3. In Yugoslavia, abandoned German machinery and tooling were taken over after the war, enabling domestic production of an MG 42 derivative known as the M53. Manufactured for and issued to the Yugoslav People's Army, the M53 retained the original MG 42’s operating system and 7.92×57mm Mauser chambering, while incorporating Yugoslav socialist crests, Cyrillic markings, and military inspection stamps such as BK.

The BK marking found throughout this M53 is a Yugoslav military control and inspection stamp. “BK” represents the Latin transliteration of the Cyrillic ВК, standing for Vojna Kontrola (Military Control). This mark confirms that the weapon or component successfully passed official Yugoslav military inspection and was formally accepted into service following manufacture or refurbishment at a state arsenal, such as those associated with Zastava. Such BK stamps are commonly encountered on post-WWII Yugoslav small arms and equipment, including M53 machine guns, M48 Mauser bayonets, and associated slings, and serve as the Yugoslav equivalent of German wartime Waffenamt acceptance marks.

Production and refurbishment were undertaken by Yugoslav state enterprises, including Enterprise (Factory) 44. The frame is marked “ПРЕДУЗЕЋЕ 44” (Factory 44), a Yugoslav state arms production facility associated with the Kragujevac/Zastava industrial complex.. Early M53s frequently incorporated original German wartime components—exactly as seen on this example—and the type remained in Yugoslav and export service well into the late 20th century, including use during the conflicts of the 1990s.

*Condition*
Overall excellent condition for a deactivated machine gun of this type. The metalwork retains a strong, even finish with light service and handling wear. All Yugoslav and German markings are crisp and legible. The bakelite buttstock shows expected period wear, including scuffs and minor edge losses, entirely consistent with service use. The German dfb-marked bipod is complete, solid, and well-defined. Deactivation has been professionally carried out and is fully compliant with UK regulations. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
