*German, WW2, 28″ Railroad Train Eagle – Deutsche Reichsbahn Adler*
Approximate measurements: 70cm / 27.5″ across, 38.5cm/ 15 1/4″ tall
This is a German WWII railroad eagle, originally affixed to the front of locomotives and boxcars during the Third Reich era. Measuring 27.5 inches wide and just over 15 inches tall, this is commonly known as a “28-inch eagle”. It has three machined and screw holes, a solid back and no markings.
Under the Third Reich, all rail transport was centralized under the German Reichsbahn, which managed locomotives, freight cars, passenger vehicles, streetcars, and trolleys. During this period, Reichsbahn railcars featured large metal eagles clutching swastikas, emblematic of Nazi regalia. These eagles were typically constructed from aluminum or zinc alloy, with threaded studs on the reverse for easy attachment to vehicles.
Nazi railway eagles were produced in various standard dimensions, typically 24, 27, 28, and 35 inches (600, 680, 720, and 900 mm), referring to the wingspan. However, there was minor variation between manufacturers, with differences of up to a ¼ or ½ inch in actual size. The 24-inch eagles were typically used on locomotives, while the larger 35-inch versions were mounted on bigger railcars or significant state railways. Although Third Reich railway eagles were designed with integral cone or stud fastening structures as part of the mold, some examples have been found with precisely machined and countersunk holes suggesting that some were originally attached using methods other than the standard stud system.
After the war, Allied denazification policies mandated the removal and destruction of these emblems. However, many were preserved as souvenirs, making them highly collectible and sought after today due to their historical significance.
