Description

~ Late 19thC Ashworth Yedo Pattern Tureen Set In Green ~

A fine 4 piece ironstone tureen set by the Staffordshire potters G.L. Ashworth & Bros, dating from the period of 1861-1891.

The set consists of three lidded tureens of increasing size and a large serving platter.

They are all finished in the Chinese style ‘Yedo’ pattern which mainly consists of flowers with a fence or gate motif.

Unusually the Yedo pattern on these pieces is in green with gilt highlights. It is more often found in simple blue and white.

All the pieces are marked for Ashworth, with various different marks. Most have the impressed ‘Ashworth’ mark, some with the initials ‘BB’ among others while a couple of the pieces have an applied stamp of ‘ABros’ with crown and banner reading ‘Yedo’ (pattern name).

A couple of the pieces are stamped with a design registry mark, unfortunately the print is rather shallow so some details including the year date cannot be read.

~ Dimensions ~

Platter: 39.5cm (15 ½ inches) x 49cm (19 ¼ inches) – weight 2.83Kg

Large Tureen: 21.5cm (8 ½ inches) x 40.5cm (16 inches) - height 24cm (9 ½ inches) – weight 2.5Kg.

Medium Tureen: 19cm (7 ½ inches) x 33cm (13 inches) x 12.5cm (5 inches) – 1.37Kg.

Small Tureen: 12cm (4 ¾ inches) x 21.5cm (8 ½ inches) x 12.5cm (5 inches) – 0.48Kg.

The set weighs 7.185 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The large tureen has some discolouration with age and some crazing of the glaze as has the lid of the medium sized tureen.

They all have a little wear to the gilt edges and the odd mark to the pattern, but nothing significant.

The tureens have some rough marks along the edges (the lids) but there are no actual chips.

The platter has some crazing of the glaze with dark lines to the centre

The set is free from damage and presents very well.
