The Mauser M1871/84 bayonet was developed to accompany the Mauser Model 1871/84 rifle, which was the German Empire's first magazine rifle, an 8-round tubular magazine upgrade of the original single-shot M1871 Mauser. The bayonet itself is a blade bayonet with a distinctive yataghan or back-curved blade, typically around 25 cm in length, with a crossguard and a muzzle ring sized to fit the M1871/84 barrel. The scabbard is usually of black leather with a steel throat and drag, often with a frog stud for belt attachment.
The Prussian Army adopted the M1871/84 in 1884, and several other German states followed suit. The bayonet saw active service during the colonial campaigns of the German Empire in Africa and the Pacific during the 1880s and 1890s, and some examples remained in secondary service well into the early 20th century. By the time of the Franco-Prussian War veteran soldiers had the M1871 single-shot, but the 1884 upgrade gave German infantry meaningful firepower parity with the French Lebel magazine rifle before the Gewehr 88 superseded it entirely.
Makers varied but principal contractors included Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co of Solingen, Simson & Co of Suhl, and the Crown Factories at Erfurt and Spandau, each leaving their own proof and acceptance stamps.

The bayonet is 37 cm (14.5 inches) in length with a 25 cm (9.75 inches) blade.
