Description

~ The 2019 Britania Four-Sided Gold Proof Double Sovereign Coin 1 of 349 ~

A rare collectible piece the four-sided shape is the world's first gold double sovereign celebrating four countries that make up the nation.

The piece is designed by Hattons of London as part of a series of commemorative coins.

*A brief overview of the history of the gold sovereign coin*

Origins (Early 19th Century): The gold sovereign was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1817, during the reign of King George III. It was part of a monetary reform to address issues related to the circulating currency at the time.

Design and Characteristics: The original design of the sovereign featured a portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse side and a portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse side. Over the years, the design underwent various changes to reflect the reigning monarch's image and various commemorative or special editions.

The British Empire: The gold sovereign was widely used in the British Empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it became a symbol of the British Empire's economic and colonial power. Sovereigns were minted not only in the UK but also in various British colonial mints, including those in Canada, Australia, and South Africa.

Gold Standard: The gold sovereign played a significant role in the establishment of the gold standard in many countries during the 19th century. It was a reliable and trusted form of currency backed by actual gold reserves.

World Wars and Suspension: During and after both World Wars, many countries temporarily suspended the gold standard, and the minting of gold sovereigns slowed down. In 1932, the UK stopped producing gold sovereigns for circulation.

Resurgence and Modern Issues: The production of gold sovereigns for general circulation was resumed in the UK in 1957. The coin has seen various limited edition and commemorative issues, making it a popular choice among numismatists and collectors.

Modern Sovereigns: The modern gold sovereign typically features the portrait of the current monarch on the obverse side and a rendition of St. George and the Dragon on the reverse side. These coins are often minted in 22-carat gold and have a standard weight of 7.98 grams.

Numismatic and Investment Value: Gold sovereigns are sought after by both collectors and investors. Their historical significance, association with the British Empire, and intrinsic gold value make them a desirable asset.

Variants and Special Editions: Throughout its history, gold sovereigns have been issued with various designs and features, including different mint marks, special editions, and unique commemoratives.

The gold sovereign has a long and storied history as a symbol of British numismatic and economic heritage. While it may not be in widespread circulation today, it remains an iconic and valuable gold coin with a rich historical legacy.
