Description

*German, WW2, Zinc Submarine (U-Boat) Badge*

The badge is maker marked on the back right but unclear, it looks like it starts with L.

The WW2 badge depicts a submarine in the centre surrounded by an oval laurel wreath with a German Eagle above clasping a swastika, gilded in gold which was worn on the lower left of the uniform.  These badges were originally made of gilded brass or heavy tombak, but as the war dragged on later awards were made of fine zinc with a gilt wash that usually fades leaving the badge a gray color.

The U-Boat War Badge was instituted by Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine und Großadmiral: 'Erich Raeder' on 13 october 1939 for award to all ranks of U-Boat personnel who had served on at least two sorties against the enemy or were wounded in action. Although this requirement might seem modest, a typical U-boat war cruise often lasted for months. In contrast, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded after three combat actions, which could occur within a week. Completing two war patrols was not only longer but also extremely dangerous, as U-boats faced constant attacks from Allied aircraft and warships. During the later part of the war, U-boat losses were so high that many crewmen did not survive beyond their second patrol.

The badge could also be awarded after an especially successful first patrol or if the recipient was wounded or killed in action. In the event of death, the award was presented to the next of kin.
