Marked inside the Cannister in white paint: Wm. Tinnappel, 449584, L.G.P.A. Paris over a partially obscured Eagle holding a Swastika over a number possibly MNA 387.

This is a very good example of a WW2 British civilian issue gas mask paired with a WW2 German gas mask canister, which bears markings suggesting it was used during the occupation of France. The combination of these items holds a unique historical significance, leaving us to imagine how they came together!

The army-green gas mask is stamped "medium" in size and dated October 1941. It was manufactured by the Leyland and Birmingham Rubber Company Ltd. The General Civilian Respirator, often seen as a symbol of the British Home Front during WWII, was developed at Porton Down and patented by Major John A. Sadd in 1935. Its simple design enabled mass production, resulting in over 50 million units being issued to the British civilian population by the outbreak of war. The respirator featured a rubber facepiece, a celluloid eyepiece, a three-point adjustable head harness, and a filter held in place by a rubber band. Exhaled air would be expelled through the edges of the mask since it lacked an exhale valve. Different sizes were available, from children’s to adult sizes, and they were typically issued in a small cardboard box that also served as a carrier.

27.5cm tall 12.5cm diameter
Long Wehrmacht second pattern M30/38 pattern case (1938-1945). It is marked on the outside of the lens box in white paint "Wm. Tinnappel, L49584, L.G.P.A. Paris" over a partially obscured Eagle holding a Swastika over a number possibly MNA 387. Wm. Tinnappel would have been the Wm for Wehrmacht (German Army) and the soldiers name and L49584 L.G.P.A Paris is his units address during the German Occupation of Paris ("Luftgau Postamt Paris"). Features an elongated space for a filter and mask as well as an empty lens case on the reverse side of the lid and a pull-to-release latch.

Condition
Excellent used condition. GAs mask with original safety pins on the back. The cannister is stiff but works well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
