Description

*Dutch, WW2, HNLMS Zwaardvisch (S814) (HM Submarine Talent P322) – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Submarine HNLMS Zwaardvisch (S814). This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions:
24.3cm x 15.9cm

HNLMS Zwaardvisch (S814) was the lead ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Zwaardvisch-class, based on the British T-class. Originally ordered as HMS Talent (P322) and built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow, she was transferred to the Dutch Navy and commissioned on 23 November 1943. In 1950, she was renamed HNLMS Zwaardvis, and she was scrapped in 1963.

During World War II, under Lieutenant Hendrikus Goossens, Zwaardvisch conducted initial trials in Holy Loch before patrolling the Atlantic and off Norway. Orders then sent her to Gibraltar, and by July 1944 she reached Trincomalee, Ceylon, joining the British Far East Fleet. Operating from there and later with the 8th Submarine Flotilla based in Fremantle, Australia, she attacked enemy shipping in the Strait of Malacca and sank several Japanese vessels. Notably, on 6 October 1944, she torpedoed and sank the German submarine U-168 off Surabaya. In the final months of the war, Zwaardvisch operated in the South China Sea and Lombok Strait, attacking Japanese merchantmen before returning to Britain for repairs in Dundee and later transferring to Rotterdam in August 1945.
