Description

*British, Post WW2, HM Submarine Aurochs (P426) – Original Photograph with Crown Copyright*

Original Photograph Post WW2 Submarine HMS Aurochs (P426). This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 20.4cm x 15.2cm. Stamped on the reverse: "P. Ships Photos Restricted (crossed out). Crown Copyright Reserved. 8082." Written: "Aurochs. 4.2.47"

HMS Aurochs (P426/S26) was an Amphion-class submarine of the Royal Navy, built by Vickers Armstrong and launched on 28 July 1945. Named after the extinct aurochs, an ancestral wild ox, she was involved in various significant events during her service.

Operational History
In 1953, Aurochs participated in the fleet review for Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, commanded by Lieutenant-Commander A. G. Tait. On 17 May 1958, while patrolling the Molucca Sea near Indonesia, she was machine-gunned by an unidentified aircraft, but sustained no damage or casualties. The UK government later attributed the attack to North Celebes rebels, though it is believed that CIA-backed pilots may have been involved.

Unlike most of her class, Aurochs was not modernized. In March 1961, she participated in a naval exercise with the US Navy off Nova Scotia. She was decommissioned in 1966 and broken up in 1967 at Troon.
