HMS Ambush (P418/S68/S18) was an Amphion-class submarine built by Vickers Armstrong and launched on 24 September 1945.
Commissioned in 1947, Ambush joined the 3rd Submarine Flotilla at Rothesay, Scotland. In 1948, she participated in snorkel trials in Arctic waters but was forced to surface due to severe weather. In 1951, she intercepted and decoded the distress message from the sinking HMS Affray. She took part in the 1953 Fleet Review for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. In November 1959, Ambush was assigned to the 10th Submarine Flotilla in Singapore, where she remained until July 1967.
Like all Amphion-class submarines, Ambush displaced 1,360 tonnes surfaced and 1,590 tonnes submerged. She measured 293 ft 6 in (89.46 m) in length, with a beam of 22 ft 4 in (6.81 m) and a draught of 18 ft 1 in (5.51 m). Powered by two Admiralty ML eight-cylinder diesel engines (2,150 hp each) and four electric motors (625 hp each), she had a top speed of 18.5 knots surfaced and 8 knots submerged. She was armed with ten 21-inch torpedo tubes (bow and stern), a QF 4-inch naval gun, a 20 mm Oerlikon cannon, and a .303 Vickers machine gun. Her crew complement was 61.
Decommissioned in 1971, Ambush was sold to Thos. W. Ward for scrapping and arrived at Inverkeithing for disposal on 5 July 1971.
