Description

*British, 1968, HM Submarine Churchill – Original Photograph*

Original Wire Photograph of HMS Churchill. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 14.9cm x 21.8cm
Typed on the front: ""Barrow-In-Furness. 20.12.1968: Britain's fourth nuclear fleet submarine, Churchill, heels over as she enters the Walney Channel at her launch at the Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire yard of Vickers Ltd. The submarine is the first Royal Navy vessel to be named after Sir Winston Churchill, and the naming ceremony was performed by Sir Winston's youngest daughter, Mrs. Christopher Soames, wife of the British politician and diplomat." On the reverse Stamped Daily Express Wire Photo Glasgow. Dec 1968. Churchill.

HMS Churchill was the first of three Churchill-class nuclear fleet submarines in the Royal Navy. Ordered in 1965, the submarine's construction began at Vickers Shipbuilding in Barrow-in-Furness in 1967. During construction, Churchill's fin was used to replace that of the sister submarine Warspite, which had been damaged in a collision with a Soviet submarine. The submarine was launched on 20 December 1968 by Mary Soames, Winston Churchill's youngest daughter, and commissioned on 15 July 1970.

Churchill was selected to trial the Royal Navy's first full-size submarine pump jet propulsion. After successful trials with both high-speed and low-speed units, the pump jet was adopted for the rest of the Churchill class. Later British submarine classes, including the Swiftsure and Trafalgar, also incorporated this propulsion system.
