Description

*Indian or North African (Moroccan), Mid-20th Century, Vintage Shibriya-style Tribal Dagger with Wooden Scabbard*

This is a vintage tribal dagger of the type often described as Shibriya-style, featuring a hand-forged clip-point steel blade approximately 19.5cm (7.7″) in length, with an overall length of 30.5cm (12″). The hilt and scabbard are carved from dark hardwood, both decorated with repeated eye motifs and dotted geometric lines. The dagger is mounted with a brass crossguard of lozenge form, complete with turned finials, and the scabbard is fitted with a matching brass throat and chape. A fixed brass belt clip is mounted to the reverse, formed as a bent tab — a practical feature common on daggers made for daily wear across both North Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

Daggers of this type are commonly referred to as Shibriya-style due to their resemblance to traditional knives worn by Bedouin and tribal groups across the Middle East and South Asia. This example may originate from either India or Morocco, as it incorporates elements distinctive to both regions. The carved decoration and fixed brass belt clip are strongly associated with mid-20th century daggers produced in Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh, India, often made for tribal use or for sale in the tourist market. Conversely, the flared brass crossguard and tapered scabbard are more typical of North African daggers such as the Moroccan Koummya, especially those made in Berber communities. The stylistic crossover suggests this dagger may have been produced during a period when traditional forms were being adapted for broader distribution or export, making precise attribution difficult — but all the more interesting.

*Condition*
Blade shows dark staining and age patina but is structurally sound. The carved wooden grip and scabbard are intact, with light wear and scuffing from use and handling. Brass fittings display tarnish and surface marks appropriate to age. The fixed brass belt clip remains solid and functional. Please refer to photographs as part of the condition report.
