Description

*South Africa, WW2-1940, "Greetings from South Africa" Comforts Committee Tin*

A scarce and evocative World War II gift tin issued by the South African Gifts and Comforts Committee for Christmas 1940, intended as a free seasonal gift for South African troops serving overseas. The lid features an embossed portrait of Prime Minister Jan Smuts, flanked by bilingual inscriptions in English ("We rely on you and are grateful") and Afrikaans ("Ons vertrou op jou en ons is dankbaar"), along with "Greetings from South Africa / Groete van Suid Afrika" below. The interior is richly gilt and repeats Smuts’ portrait with a dedication dated Christmas 1940. These tins, similar in spirit to the Princess Mary tins of WWI, were funded through public donations and distributed to soldiers as morale-boosting comfort parcels. Officially meant for all ranks and all South African servicemen, in practice their distribution reflected the inequalities of the time, and non-white troops often received them less frequently or in differing forms. This example measures approximately 18 cm x 11.4 cm x 2.8 cm and is empty.

*Condition*
Condition is consistent with age, showing moderate surface wear, scratches, and scattered spots of oxidation externally, while the interior retains its original gilding with some corrosion marks and spotting. The hinge and closure are intact but show typical age-related rusting along the edges. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
