*German, WWII, 1939 Kriegsverdienstkreuz (War Merit Cross) 2nd Class Without Swords, Maker Mark “41” (Gebrüder Bender), with Original Ribbon*
A good and honest Second World War German War Merit Cross 2nd Class without swords, retaining its original ribbon and clearly marked suspension ring, representing a classic example of this widely awarded but historically significant Third Reich decoration.
The cross is of the standard Maltese form with finely pebbled surfaces and crisp raised borders, the obverse centred with a wreathed swastika, and the reverse dated 1939, denoting the institution of the award. The suspension ring is clearly stamped “41”, identifying the maker as Gebrüder Bender of Idar-Oberstein, an officially authorised manufacturer of state awards during the period.
The medal is constructed in zinc with a bronze wash, now largely worn through, resulting in an even dull grey tone with areas of greenish patination, entirely consistent with mid- to late-war production. The suspension loop and ring remain intact, and the medal hangs correctly from its original ribbon.
The ribbon is of the correct pattern, red with white and black central stripes, showing honest age and light fraying, particularly around the fold and mounting point, but remaining complete and displayable.

History Note:
Instituted on 18 October 1939, the War Merit Cross was awarded for service contributing to the German war effort. The without swords version, as seen here, was typically awarded to civilians and military personnel for non-combatant merit, distinguishing it from the Iron Cross, which recognised battlefield bravery. The maker code system was introduced to identify authorised manufacturers, with “41” attributed to Gebrüder Bender, a known and respected producer of wartime decorations.
