Description

*Swedish, 1944, Swedish Army M/39 Wool Field Tunic, Tre Kronor Buttons, Hemvärnet Collar Tabs, A.C.B. Marked*

An original Swedish Army M/1939 wool field tunic manufactured during the Second World War and dated 1944. This classic Swedish military garment is constructed from heavy grey-green felted wool and retains its original military configuration including Tre Kronor (three crowns) buttons, four front pockets and two rear skirt pockets.

The tunic features the distinctive high folding collar typical of the m/39 pattern and is fitted with green collar patches bearing the Swedish national emblem of the three crowns above the letter “H”, identifying the wearer with the Swedish Home Guard (Hemvärnet). Many wartime Swedish Army tunics were later issued to the Home Guard during the post-war period, and the presence of these collar tabs reflects this continued service. The front of the jacket closes with a vertical row of Swedish military buttons, each embossed with the national Tre Kronor emblem. The chest pockets are pleated and buttoned, while two larger pockets appear at the lower front. The rear skirt also incorporates two buttoned pockets, a configuration commonly seen on the m/39 pattern.

Internally the tunic retains its cotton reinforcement lining panels and three internal pockets. The lining is clearly stamped with the Swedish military property mark consisting of the three crowns above the depot marking A.C.B., together with the date 1944 and size marking 100. The abbreviation A.C.B. refers to Arméns Centrala Beklädnadsförråd, the Swedish Army Central Clothing Depot responsible for the issue and distribution of military uniforms.

Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 44 cm. Sleeve length: 63 cm. Overall length (shoulder to hem): 80 cm.

Historical Note:
The Swedish Army introduced the M/1939 field uniform shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. Although Sweden remained officially neutral, the country mobilised large numbers of troops for national defence and border security during the conflict. The m/39 tunic became the standard field jacket for Swedish soldiers throughout the wartime period and continued in service into the early Cold War.

Following the war many of these tunics were transferred to the Swedish Home Guard (Hemvärnet), a national volunteer defence force established in 1940 to protect infrastructure and maintain territorial defence. Wartime produced garments such as this example were therefore frequently worn well into the 1950s and beyond.

*Condition*
Service-worn original example showing normal signs of age and use. The wool remains structurally sound with general surface wear and minor marks consistent with field use. The Tre Kronor buttons remain present. The collar tabs are intact and the internal lining retains the clear Swedish depot stamp dated 1944. Internal reinforcement panels and pockets remain in place. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
