*Swedish, WW2, Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) M/1939 Field Tunic, Anchor Buttons, Size 96, Tre Kronor Stamp, Crossed Cannon Collar Patches*
An original Swedish Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) M/1939 pattern wool field tunic constructed from the characteristic Swedish grey-green wool used by the Swedish armed forces during the Second World War period. The tunic follows the classic M/39 design with a straight stand collar, concealed front closure, and four external pockets with scalloped flaps.
This example retains the distinctive Swedish Navy Coastal Artillery anchor buttons to the front closure and at the collar. The rear pocket flaps are fitted with Swedish Army “Tre Kronor” (Three Crowns) buttons, an interesting mixed configuration commonly encountered on Swedish service garments where buttons were replaced during service life or refurbishment.
The collar retains its original Coastal Artillery collar patches, edged in light green piping and embroidered with the crossed artillery insignia used by the branch. These insignia identify the tunic as belonging to the Kustartilleriet, the coastal defence branch of the Swedish Navy responsible for manning fixed coastal fortifications, artillery batteries, and naval defensive positions along Sweden’s extensive Baltic coastline.
Internally the tunic retains its original cotton lining and several period identification markings. A printed label reads “N 96 K”, likely a Swedish naval clothing depot or inventory marking. The rear lining also shows a double Tre Kronor stamp, confirming official Swedish military issue. Additional internal labels marked “C48” likely to be wearer identification markers commonly applied during service use.
The tunic also features the typical Swedish M/39 construction details including internal pocket tabs, reinforcement stitching, and the distinctive rear skirt pockets.
Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 47 cm. Sleeve length: 61 cm. Overall length (hem to top of collar): 73.5 cm.
History Note:
Sweden maintained official neutrality during the Second World War but kept a large mobilised military force to defend its borders and coastline. The Swedish Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) formed a crucial part of this defensive strategy, operating heavy coastal guns, minefields, and fortified positions guarding key naval approaches throughout the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia.
Uniforms such as the M/1939 wool tunic were worn widely by Swedish armed forces during the war and into the early Cold War period. Coastal artillery personnel served at fixed coastal batteries and fortress complexes designed to prevent hostile naval incursions, reflecting Sweden’s strong emphasis on territorial defence during the era.
*Condition*
Service-worn example showing signs of age and use consistent with military service. The wool remains structurally sound overall with areas of wear and light surface thinning visible in places. The lining displays age-related wear and light staining, and there are small areas of fraying around internal seams and pocket edges. Internal labels and stamps remain visible. The collar insignia and anchor buttons are still present and intact. There is an additional anchor button to the front (5 instead of normal 4) and two rear pocket buttons feature the Tre Kronor rather than the anchor.
