Description

*British, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Commemorative Medal, Ribbon and “Elizabeth II” Bar*

A British commemorative medal issued to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. The medal is struck in gilt base metal and suspended from a patriotic red, white, and blue ribbon mounted on a gilt suspension bar inscribed “ELIZABETH II.”

The obverse features a crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Imperial State Crown and royal robes. Around the edge is the inscription: “CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II – 1953.”

The reverse bears the inscription: “TO COMMEMORATE THE CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II – JUNE 2, 1953.” This text is surrounded by a decorative wreath border. The medal is fitted with a simple suspension ring and mounted ribbon with a pin-back bar for wear. These medals were produced as patriotic souvenirs and were commonly distributed at local civic events, schools, street parties, and community celebrations across Britain and the Commonwealth during the coronation festivities.

Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 32 mm.

History Note:
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, following her accession to the throne after the death of King George VI in February 1952. The event was one of the most significant ceremonial occasions of the 20th century and was the first British coronation to be televised, allowing millions of viewers in Britain and around the world to watch the ceremony live.

Across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, extensive celebrations were organised including street parties, parades, school events, and civic commemorations. To mark the occasion, a vast range of commemorative items were produced including mugs, tins, medals, badges, and medallions.

While an official Coronation Medal (1953) was awarded to selected members of the armed forces, police, civil service, and other distinguished recipients, far more common were privately produced commemorative medals such as this example. These were designed to allow members of the public—especially schoolchildren and local community participants—to retain a souvenir of the historic event.

Today they remain popular historical keepsakes associated with the early years of Elizabeth II’s reign and the post-war celebrations that marked the beginning of a new era in British history.

*Condition*
Good overall condition with light age wear and some surface marks to the gilt finish. The ribbon shows age toning and staining consistent with age. Suspension bar and pin intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
