Description

*British, c.1930s–1940s, Smiths “Astral” Marine Bulkhead Clock, Coventry Movement, Brass Case, 8-Day Ship’s Clock*

A classic Smiths “Astral” marine bulkhead clock, manufactured in Great Britain and fitted within a heavy solid brass ship’s bulkhead case with hinged glazed bezel.

The clock features a traditional white dial with bold Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. Above the seconds dial is the Slow/Fast regulator indicator (S-F) allowing fine adjustment of the movement. The dial is signed “SMITHS ASTRAL” with “MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN” at the lower edge. The hinged bezel opens via the side catch to reveal the dial and winding arbor. Inside is a quality Smiths Astral mechanical movement, stamped with the Coventry key trademark along with the inscriptions: "COVENTRY (within key trademark) / ASTRAL / MADE IN ENGLAND / Serial number: 23753

The clock is supplied with a winding key. The enamel/paint dial is currently loose but the retaining pins are present for re-securing. The case retains its original lacquered brass finish with attractive age patina, typical of marine instruments exposed to shipboard environments.

Approx. Measurements -  Diameter of base: 26.5 cm, Height: approx. 10.5 cm

History Note:
Smiths clocks were among the most widely used British marine and industrial timepieces of the 20th century.

The Astral brand originated with H. Williamson Ltd. of Coventry, a respected maker of high-quality clock movements. In 1932, Smiths acquired Williamson, continuing production of the well-regarded Astral series for maritime, industrial and institutional use.

Bulkhead clocks like this were typically installed aboard Royal Navy vessels, merchant ships, and engine rooms, where their robust 8-day lever escapement movements and heavy brass cases ensured reliability in harsh environments.

The Coventry key trademark seen on the movement is a distinctive mark of the Williamson factory and is commonly encountered on early Smiths Astral clocks from the 1930s–1950s period.

*Condition*
The dial is currently loose but the original securing pins are present and included with the clock. The brass case shows age-related patina, spotting and wear consistent with maritime or industrial use. The hinged bezel and latch operate correctly, and the glass appears intact. Movement appears complete but service may be required before operation. Untested mechanical movement.  Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
