*British, WW2 Era, Dorset Regiment Bi-Metal Cap Badge, Slider Fitting*
A good original-style Dorsetshire Regiment cap badge, measuring approximately 4.5cm x 4.7cm, of bi-metal construction with a brass laurel wreath and scroll surround, and white metal central devices. The badge features the regiment’s distinctive castle, sphinx and battle honour “MARABOUT”, with the motto “PRIMUS IN INDIS” below and “DORSET” to the lower scroll. The reverse retains its vertical brass slider fitting.
The Dorsetshire Regiment was formed in 1881 and served until amalgamation in 1958. Its badge reflects several important regimental honours: the sphinx and MARABOUT commemorate service in Egypt in 1801, the castle refers to the regiment’s connection with the storming of Castle San Sebastian, and PRIMUS IN INDIS — “First in India” — records the regiment’s claim as the first regular British regiment to serve in India.
