Description

*British, WW1–WW2, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Cap Badge, Bi-Metal , Brass Slider Fitting*

A good original bi-metal cap badge of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own), retaining its brass slider fitting to the reverse. This classic other ranks pattern was worn from the late Victorian period through both World Wars and remained in service until the regiment’s amalgamation in 1958.

The badge features the Prince of Wales’s feathers above the motto “Ich Dien” (“I Serve”), with the Duke of Cambridge’s cypher beneath, all enclosed within a laurel wreath. The central scroll bears the battle honour “Albuhera”, commemorating the regiment’s distinguished action at the Battle of Albuera in 1811 during the Peninsular War. The lower white metal scroll reads “Middlesex Regt”, completing one of the most recognisable infantry regiment badges of the British Army.

The Middlesex Regiment was famously known as “The Diehards,” a nickname earned after the fierce fighting at Albuera, where Colonel William Inglis reportedly called to his men, “Die hard, my men, die hard!” as they held their ground under devastating attack.

Approx. Measurements – 5 cm x 4 cm.

*Condition*
Good original condition with honest service wear and age patina throughout. The bi-metal finish remains well defined with clear detail to the feathers, cypher, and scrolls. Brass slider to the reverse is firmly in place. Light surface wear and age-related rubbing consistent with period use. Please see photographs as part of the condition report. A desirable original example of a classic British infantry regiment cap badge with strong WW1 and WW2 collecting appeal.
