An original Second World War British Atlantic Star campaign medal, awarded for operational service in the Battle of the Atlantic between 1939 and 1945. This is the classic six-pointed bronze star bearing the crowned royal cipher of King George VI (“GRI VI”) to the obverse within a circlet inscribed “THE ATLANTIC STAR,” suspended from its correct watered silk ribbon in graduated blue, white, and sea-green tones representing the Atlantic theatre.
Instituted in May 1945, the Atlantic Star was awarded to Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, RAF Coastal Command, and certain Army personnel who completed the qualifying operational service in the Atlantic and Home Waters against the constant threat of U-boats, Luftwaffe attack, and extreme weather conditions. It remains one of the most recognisable and historically significant British WWII campaign stars, closely associated with convoy escort duty, anti-submarine warfare, and the long struggle to keep Britain supplied during the war.
The medal is struck in yellow copper-zinc alloy (commonly referred to as bronze) with the standard plain reverse as issued. The ribbon appears original and correctly mounted for wear, showing the familiar age fading and honest service patina expected of an authentic wartime example.
