~ Large 1893 Watercolour By Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-1897) Of Scarborough Harbour ~

The watercolour and body colour painting depicts numerous small sailing vessels and a paddle steamer on choppy seas with seagulls overhead.

The harbour mole is in the foreground and a panoramic view of the town is in the background.

It is signed and dated to the lower right.

The painting is presented in a wooden glazed frame with a single, lined card mount.

~ Thomas Bush Hardy ~

Thomas Bush Hardy (3 May 1842 – 15 December 1897) was a British marine painter and watercolourist.

Hardy was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 3 May 1842. As a young man he travelled in the Netherlands and Italy.

In 1884 Hardy was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He exhibited with the Society and also at the Royal Academy.

His paintings feature coastal scenes in England and the Netherlands, the French Channel ports and the Venetian Lagoon.

He died on 15 December 1897 in Maida Vale, London, and was buried in an unmarked grave on the eastern side of Highgate Cemetery.

Hardy had nine children. His son, Dudley Hardy, was a painter, illustrator and poster designer.

His daughter, Dorothy, received an MBE after working as a nurse in the First World War.

Please refer to the images for the condition. The painting is in good order; there is some wear to the frame.

~ Dimensions ~

The frame is 99 cm (39 inches) wide and 53 cm (21 inches) tall.
