*USA, World War II, U.S. Navy Seth Thomas Type E Bakelite Bulkhead Clock with Key, 12430-E*

Original World War II-period U.S. Navy Type E bulkhead clock manufactured by Seth Thomas and housed in its black Bakelite / phenolic naval case retaining the original hinged bezel and winding key. The black dial is marked “U.S. NAVY” over serial number “12430-E” with dual 12- and 24-hour military numerals and lower text “MADE BY SETH THOMAS IN U.S.A.” The rear of the case bears the molded General Electric “GE” monogram, identifying the original wartime GE-produced Bakelite naval housing used during the early 1941–1943 production partnership between Seth Thomas and General Electric.

This example represents the standard Bureau of Ships (BuShips) Type E naval timepiece produced for installation aboard U.S. Navy vessels during the Second World War, intended for bridge, radio room, engine room and compartment bulkhead mounting. The relatively early five-digit serial number and “-E” suffix place manufacture within the main wartime production period, circa 1941–1944.

The clock retains its original matte black no-glare military dial with prominent cream numerals and matching naval specification hands. The dial features both conventional and 24-hour military time markings, a layout designed for continuous naval watchkeeping and wartime operational use. The hinged bezel opens correctly and the original period winding key accompanies the clock, a feature often missing from surviving examples.

Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 19.6 cm (7.75 inches).

History Note:
During World War II, Seth Thomas produced large quantities of marine clocks for the U.S. Navy under Bureau of Ships contracts. The Type E Bakelite clock became one of the standard naval timepieces fitted across American warships and naval installations. Early wartime production utilised Bakelite housings manufactured by General Electric, identifiable by the molded GE monogram to the rear of the case, before later-war production simplified and standardised components further. The use of molded phenolic/Bakelite construction provided durability, electrical insulation and resistance to harsh marine environments while also reducing strategic metal usage during wartime production.

*Condition*
Generally good original wartime condition showing age and service wear throughout. Bakelite case remains structurally sound with scattered surface scratches, marks and handling wear commensurate with age. Hinged bezel functions correctly and retains original glass panel. Dial remains clear and highly legible with some minor age-related wear and dust accumulation visible under close inspection. Original winding key present. Movement functionality and timekeeping accuracy untested. Dial retains original wartime luminous paint formula. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
