*Victorian / Edwardian Bone & Ebonised Wood Double-Nine Domino Set (51 out of 55 tiles)*

A highly attractive late Victorian / early Edwardian domino set housed within its original fitted wooden storage box, dating to circa 1890–1910. The dominoes are constructed in the traditional manner, featuring polished bone faces securely mounted onto ebonised hardwood backs with central brass pins visible on both sides. The set displays a beautiful aged appearance, with warm cream bone tones contrasting deeply against the dark ebonised hardwood bodies. Each piece features hand-set black pips with strong visual clarity throughout. The construction style, materials, and fitted box are highly characteristic of late 19th- or early 20th-century British or continental European manufacture.

This is an incomplete double-nine set containing 51 of the original 55 pieces. The four missing tiles are all blank-ended examples: (0-0), (1-0), (2-0), and (3-0). All higher-value families from the 4s through to the 9s remain fully present and entirely intact.

Approx. Measurements – Box: 28 cm long x 6.5 cm wide x 7 cm tall. Dominoes: 4.7 cm long x 2.9 cm wide x 1 cm thick.

History Note:
Bone and ebony-style domino sets were staple luxury items throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, commonly found in middle- and upper-class parlours, gentlemen’s clubs, and military officer messes. Manufactured before the widespread adoption of synthetic plastics, these gaming pieces utilised polished cattle bone and dense hardwoods to create durable sets intended for long-term use.

*Condition*
Dominoes: General age-related wear, light surface scuffs, minor staining, and small edge chips from historic handling. Several tiles exhibit natural bone shrinkage lines and faint hairline ageing marks to the faces.

Box: Original wood finish showing minor scratches, handling patina, and small edge losses. A small historic split/loss is present to one rear corner. The original brass hinges remain firmly attached and fully functional.

Completeness: Four pieces are absent from the standard 55-piece double-nine set as detailed above. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.
