An original late Victorian British military gymnasium training sabre manufactured for regulated Army sword exercise and fencing instruction, retaining War Department inspection markings and a June 1896 acceptance date.

The sabre features a long straight steel practice blade of flattened rectangular section terminating in its original rolled safety button tip designed for controlled sparring and drill instruction. The substantial pressed steel bowl guard provides full hand protection and is fitted with a curved rear knuckle bow together with its original chequered fishskin and wire-bound grip.

The ricasso retains partially visible Victorian inspection and acceptance marks including Crown over “33” over “W”, Crown over “35” over “W”, together with a clearly struck “6 ’96” date mark denoting June 1896. The opposing side carries an indistinct crowned inspection stamp. The “W” inspection marks are consistent with Wilkinson manufacture or Wilkinson inspection acceptance associated with War Department contract production.

History Note:
Military gymnasium sabres were specialist training weapons used throughout the British Army during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to teach regulated sabre drill, fencing, and close-combat exercise. Unlike sharpened service swords, these examples utilised blunt rectangular-section blades with rolled safety terminals to minimise serious injury during sparring instruction. Such weapons were commonly employed within Army gymnasiums, officer training schools, cadet colleges, and cavalry instruction establishments. Wilkinson Sword of London was among the foremost British military sword contractors of the era and supplied both combat swords and official training weapons under War Department contracts.

*Condition*
Untouched attic-found condition with heavy age patination and surface oxidation throughout. The rolled safety tip remains intact. Hilt structurally solid. Surface rust, age wear, and scattered abrasions visible across the guard and blade. Grip retains its wire binding and fishskin covering with expected wear from age and handling. Markings remain partially visible but softened through oxidation and age.  Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
