*Soviet/Russian, Interwar-Dated 1929, Nagant M1895 7.62×38mmR Revolver, Tula Arsenal, Matching Serial No. 887, Old Spec UK Deactivated*

An original Soviet Nagant Model 1895 revolver, manufactured at the renowned First Tula Arsenal in 1929, retaining matching serial numbers, excellent original finish, original chequered walnut grips and desirable old-specification UK deactivation allowing full handling characteristics.

This example was manufactured at the First Tula Arsenal, identified by the distinctive star enclosing an arrow above the crisply stamped 1929 date on the left side of the frame. Manufacture in 1929 places it firmly within the early Soviet inter-war production period, before wartime expedients simplified manufacture, and examples from this era are noted for their high machining quality and excellent factory finish.

The revolver retains matching serial number 887 on the left side of the frame, the left side of the trigger guard and the cylinder. Numerous original Soviet inspection and acceptance marks remain visible throughout, including small inspector's stamps to the frame, cylinder, barrel and grip frame. The original lanyard ring remains fitted to the butt, while the original finely chequered walnut grip panels are particularly well preserved, displaying attractive colour and sharp chequering.

Approximate Measurements: Barrel Length: 11.4 cm (4.5 inches). Cylinder Capacity: 7 rounds. Calibre: 7.62×38mmR

History Note:
Designed by Léon Nagant, the Nagant M1895 was adopted by Imperial Russia in 1895 and remained the standard Russian and later Soviet military revolver for over four decades. Chambered for the distinctive 7.62×38mmR cartridge, it incorporated a unique gas-seal mechanism in which the cylinder moves forward as the hammer is cocked, sealing against the barrel to improve ballistic performance—an engineering feature found on virtually no other standard military revolver. Although gradually superseded by the Tokarev TT-30 and TT-33 self-loading pistols during the 1930s, the Nagant continued to see widespread service throughout the Second World War with Red Army officers, NKVD personnel, tank crews and specialist troops.

Manufactured at the First Tula Arsenal in 1929, this revolver represents desirable early Soviet inter-war production, a period noted for its high standards of machining and finish before the demands of wartime manufacture. Early Tula examples retaining matching numbers, original finish and desirable old-specification UK deactivation are increasingly sought after by collectors.

*Condition*
Presented in very good original military condition with an attractive, even blue finish displaying only honest handling and service wear to the high points and edges. The frame, barrel and cylinder retain crisp machining detail, while the principal markings remain clear and legible, including the Tula Arsenal star-and-arrow emblem, 1929 date, matching serial number 887 and numerous Soviet inspection stamps.

The original walnut grip panels remain particularly well preserved, retaining sharp chequering and rich colour. The original lanyard ring is also present.

Mechanically, the revolver cocks and dry-fires correctly, with the cylinder rotating and indexing as intended. The loading gate opens normally for chamber inspection, and the cylinder retaining pin withdraws under spring pressure, although the cylinder itself was not removed during inspection. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.

Deactivation Details:
Deactivated to desirable Old Specification standards and accompanied by its original Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House Deactivation Certificate dated 7 May 2009 under certificate number CG 81013. The certificate records the revolver as a Nagant 1895 Revolver, serial number 887, calibre 7.62 mm, with a 4.50-inch barrel, country of origin Russia, and submitted by Ryton Arms Ltd. As was common Proof House practice at the time, only the numeric serial number was recorded on the certificate.

Because of its earlier deactivation, the revolver retains highly desirable handling characteristics including a functioning single- and double-action mechanism, rotating cylinder, dry-firing action and opening loading gate, features no longer permitted under current UK/EU deactivation standards.
