Description

*1815, East India Company Flintlock Carbine, Early Pattern. Obsolete Calibre*

An 1815 Flintlock carbine. The lock is marked to the British East India Company. It is dated 1815 with the rampant lion logo and number 2 under crown proof stamp. The wood work has a lovely deep patina with brass plated stock. The barrel is lightly engraved and is 57.5cm in length.

1813 saw the British Crown take over sovereignty over the Indian territories previously held by the East India Company. Whilst renewing the Royal Charter for a further 20 years, Parliament revoked all trading monopoly privileges except those in tea, held by The Company, the basis for the success of the preceding century. The loss paved the way for other British companies to trade in the east putting huge strain on its finances. This caused unrest with local and natives communities. Arming its employees to protect its assets was one the way the EIC dealt with this situation. These weapons were also used by the rich and wealthy for game hunting.

*Condition*
The action is firm and cocks and dryfires. The barrel is aged as you'd expect and has some pitting and discolouration. The cleaning rod is missing. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
