Description

*Afghan, 19th Century, Jezail Flintlock Musket, Bone Inlay & Six White Metal Bands, Obsolete Calibre*

A striking example of a 19th century Afghan jezail, measuring approx. 134.3cm overall with a 100cm barrel. This long, curved-butt musket features a traditional flintlock mechanism and retains fine tribal decoration. The stock is richly adorned with bone inlay panels and domed iron tacks, while the barrel is secured by six hand-chased white-metal bands decorated with scrolling foliate motifs. It retains its original ramrod. A textbook piece of North-West Frontier craftsmanship, combining functional weaponry with distinctive Afghan artistry.

Historical Note:
The jezail was the favoured firearm of Afghan tribesmen throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Distinguished by its long barrel and curved stock, it was designed for accurate, long-range shooting from elevated terrain. Jezails were used with devastating effect against British forces during the First and Second Anglo-Afghan Wars, where their superior range gave Afghan fighters a significant tactical advantage over standard British muskets. Many jezails incorporated recycled locks and barrels from earlier European firearms, adapted and restocked by tribal armourers to local tastes. The elaborate decoration — often including bone, horn or silver inlay, along with metal banding — reflected both status and regional tradition.

*Condition*
The musket is in sound display condition with clear signs of tribal manufacture and long service use. The flintlock mechanism is complete though heavily pitted, with surface oxidation and age-related wear consistent with 19th century origin. The barrel shows forging marks, patination, and pitting but remains stable. The wooden stock has cracks, minor losses, and evidence of age repairs, there is no butt plate, though it retains the majority of its original bone inlay decoration. The six white-metal barrel bands remain firmly in place with attractive hand-chased decoration. The ramrod is present. Overall, this is a well-preserved and evocative jezail that displays superbly as a piece of Afghan martial heritage. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
