    Description

~ American Civil War Period Confederate States Naval Officers Belt Buckle 1861-65 ~

A Confederate States Naval brass belt buckle dating to the American Civil War of 1861-65.

The definition is very crisp, there is no evidence of it being a sand cast copy. Also note that there is no infill on the main buckle where the oak leaf wreath meets the affixed clasp, a common fault with copies is the presence of this infill.

The Navy of the Confederate States (CSN) was the naval branch of the Confederate States armed forces, established by an act of the Confederate Congress on February 21, 1861. It was responsible for Confederate naval operations during the American Civil War.

To the front of the buckle is a wreath with the words ‘The Confederate States Marine Corps’ along with 11 stars (one for each of the southern states) and two cannons crossed against an anchor.

The reverse is stamped ‘Issac Campbell & Co’.

Samuel Isaac founded the commission house of S. Isaac, Campbell & Co in London in the 1850s and went on to supply war materials to the southern states of America during the civil war.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The buckle is 2 inches (5.1 cm) in diameter and a width of 3 inches (7.6cm) including the belt loops. It weighs 94g.

    ~ Condition ~

The buckle is in great condition with the general wear associated with an item of this age including a deep patina. It would have been originally entirely gilded, just traces remain. The makers stamped letters are suitable worn with no rough edges.
