~ Antique Pit Pony Hoof Pin Cushion ~

An unusual pin cushion fashioned from the hoof of a naturally deceased pit pony.

A pit pony, otherwise known as a mining horse, was a horse, pony or mule commonly used underground in mines from the mid-18th until the mid-20th century. The term "pony" was sometimes broadly applied to any equine working underground.

The hoof has a copper shoe and a velvet cushion top in which to stick pins.

It dates to somewhere around the late 19th century/early 20th century.

The piece measures approximately 9cm (3 ½ inches) across and weighs 500g

~ Condition ~

The piece is in very good condition commensurate with age.

The velvet is very clean and probably a replacement.
